BORSHCHIV EMBROIDERY FESTIVAL HELD IN TERNOPIL OBLAST
IX regional folk and art festival 'Borshchiv Vyshyvanka' took place in the city of Borshchiv, Ternopil oblast, on September, 18.
The festival was founded in 2007 with the purpose to recover the technique of Borshchiv embroidery and to preserve authentic Ukrainian costume. The distinct train of Borshchiv vyshyvanka is black, dense embroidery on sleeves and hemp canvas.
More than 100 embroidery techniques are known in Ukraine but masters from Borshchiv use more than 50 embroidery techniques. They use wool, cotton and mouline threads combining them with metal threads (embroidery with metal threads is practiced just in Borshchiv district).
The festival guests could attend vyshyvankas and arts and crafts exhibition, as well as borshch festival.
